About Us
SAFE, Syria-Antigonish Families Embrace, formed in Antigonish in 2015 for the purpose of sponsoring Syrian refugee families displaced from their homes by war to resettle and start a new life in the Antigonish area. This requires the support of our whole community, both town and county, and we invite you to join us in this endeavour.
Many of us have listened to the violence, destruction and trauma inflicted on the Syrian people by a brutal civil war that is now in its eighth year. More than 465,000 Syrians have been killed in the fighting, many are civilians, women and children. Over a million people have been injured and over 12 million - half the country's prewar population - have been displaced from their homes. As of February 2018, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) had registered over 5.5 million refugees from Syria and estimated that there are over 6.5 million internally displaced persons (IDP) within Syria's borders. They have little hope of returning home safely; they have lost their homes and possessions, and their families have been forced to scatter and seek temporary refuge wherever they can.
As of June 2019, SAFE has sponsored 5 families and is expecting another to arrive later this year. We are working to sponsor more families as we focus on settlement, integration, and advocacy. We work collaboratively with other local sponsorship groups, Tri-Heart and Canadians Accepting Refugees Everywhere (CARE), to create a welcoming and supportive community for our newcomer families.
